
My Story
Dr. Elizabeth S. Palmer, (b. 1982), is a music educator and researcher. She has degrees in music technology from Susquehanna University (BA), and music education from Towson University (MS), and University of Southern California (DMA). She is an adjunct professor at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, teaching secondary instrumental music methods, and a residential college coordinator at University of Southern California. She is the inaugural director for diversity and inclusion for Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity.
Dr. Liz began her teaching career in the Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), serving as an itinerant instrumental music teacher and later teaching middle school band, orchestra, and general music courses. During her tenure at PGCPS Dr. Liz created outreach and engagement opportunities for instrumental students to receive coaching, mentoring, and participate in masterclasses.
Described as a talented, gifted, thoughtful, and innovative educator, Dr. Liz is the founder and executive director of Modern Maestro, Inc., an outreach and engagement program for K-12 students with a strong interest in music. Modern Maestro, Inc. provides enrichment opportunities for students, professional development for teachers, and fiscal sponsorship for school-based music programs.
Dr. Liz's research focuses on social justice in music education; social, cultural, and economic capital in music education; and culturally relevant and responsive music teaching. In July 2020 she founded The Palmer Research Group to explore contemporary challenges in music education, use research to address those challenges, and find practical solutions for music practitioners.
The Palmer Research Group is a recipient of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and Society for Research in Music Education (SRME) 2022 Research Grant. The SRME grant will fund "Pilot Study: Framework for Culturally Relevant and Responsive Music Teaching."
Dr. Liz is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, National Music Honor Society Music; Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity; Kappa Delta Pi, National Education Honors Society; National Association for Music Education (NAfME); and Maryland Music Educators Association (Md-MEA).
In her free time Dr. Liz enjoys spending time with family and friends, taking walks, riding her bike, and going to the movies.
